On the night celebrating a big win, police arrested defense attorney Mickey Haller, who found the body of a former client in the trunk of his Lincoln car. Haller is immediately charged with the murder, but he cannot pay an exorbitant $ 5 million bail that a retaliatory judge slapped on.

Mickey chose to represent himself and was forced to fend for himself from his cell at the Twin Towers Correctional Center in Downtown Los Angeles. All the time, he has to look behind his shoulder - as a court officer, he's an immediate target, and he makes few friends when he uncovers a corruption plot in prison.

But the bigger plot is against him. Haller knows he is besieged, whether it be by a new or old enemy. While his trusted team is investigating, including his half-brother Harry Bush, Haller must use all of his skills in the courtroom to counter the evidence against him.

Although he could pass an acquittal, Mickey understands that it won't be enough. To truly be acquitted, he must find out who committed the murder and why. It is the law of innocence.

In his biggest case yet, Lincoln's attorney fights for his life and proves once again why he is "a worthy colleague of Atticus Finch ... leading the group in a legal thriller game" (Los Angeles Times).
