I am so sad that this book is finished. It gave me a hangover from a book that I think will last for a while. What an incredible journey Mr. Pope took me with this wonderful story. The Requiem for Immortals is a book that I highly recommend to readers of fiction.

Two thousand years ago there was evil in the world. Known to some as the child prodigy, Cú Roí was the product of two different fairy races. It was a disaster for the world, existing only to destroy. He is ultimately defeated by the fairy Grímnir, who is only tasked with killing him, and whose lifeline has been linked to that of Cú Roí. Fast forward to modern Manchester. A man who comes home at night is brutally attacked in the street. Lying on the ground waiting for death to claim it, he witnessed the resurrection of the deadly monster, Grímnir. His return to life only means one thing ... that Cú Roí is back.

Like a mulid is a dwarf who often gets drunk. One evening at his favorite pub, a huge man covered in dragon tattoos interrupts your drinking marathon. The man presents himself as Grímnir. Cam, being a dishonored Elf, has no idea of the extent of Grímnir's presence. The two embarked on a journey to find the answers Grímnir sought. Along the way, they encounter all kinds of creatures imaginable, some of which are totally unimaginable. Between Cam, Grímnir and a group of mortals, the Elves, Immortals and Ifrit, must unite to defeat Cú Roí one last time. But could all these races unite to accomplish this gigantic task?

First of all a warning: don't read this book if you have a problem with too many people dying. There is serious collateral damage throughout the story, and I would not recommend this book to anyone who is opposed to violence. Although I felt that the slaughter and the bloodshed was an essential part of what made this story true. Many writers throw violence at their books because they think they need it, but I have felt tormented by every painful blow throughout this story.

It helps that Vincent Pope is a talented narrator - the ease with which he explains events is impeccable. His descriptions of various scenes are exceptionally vivid, and his world-building ability is remarkable. I photographed the sets with perfect clarity, and it had been a long time since I felt immersed in an original world. Bobbe has a great way to get things done to bring the reader right into the story. An example is, "The swollen sun was slowly descending towards the horizon, and its golden face bore the blush of the color of the world." How cute is that?

Although the premise is in 500 BC, I love that the story actually spans five days. All chapters are listed from the point of view of the characters in the book. This type of storytelling can be very complex. I often find that when the book is written this way, I have trouble remembering who the chapter belongs to. But that was certainly not the case here. Towards the end of the book, you didn't even have to look at the chapter title. The characters are designed so intricately that I had no problem figuring out what perspective each chapter was written from. The characters were large. Bobbe has introduced all kinds of fairytale creatures into his story. This includes Elves, Ifrit, Zombies, Vampires, and weird dog-like creatures called Barghest. But what I really liked was that it wasn't one of those creatures conventionally. They all belong to the wonderfully created world of Vincent Pope.
